In a commendable effort to support Ukraine during challenging times, Door County Candle (DCC) initiated a program to donate a portion of its candle sales to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) aiding Ukrainian refugees. The overwhelming positive response to this initiative inspired the company to redefine its mission, aspiring to become a philanthropically driven organization. DCC sought to establish a system enabling to nominate causes, which DCC would vet and select every quarter to support. Each selected cause would benefit from donations tied to candle sales. Furthermore, DCC aimed to develop a fundraising program, empowering individuals to support their initiatives through product sales.

With customers on the website being able to select the cause which they are interested in donating, it was critical to ensure that the “cause products” be attributed to specific financial accounting entries within the ERP. Further it is important to ensure that the allocated funds are transferred appropriately to the chosen cause, with proper auditability.
With the website combining ecommerce with Philanthropy and Fund Raising, which moves the user away from traditional ecommerce order placement process, user experience and checkout flows were critical to the success of the site.
In the Wellness industry, loyalty programs are key to increasing client loyalty and growing the business. So, having a well-structured, tiered loyalty program that allows users to earn and redeem points in a clear and transparent manner was important to the success of the site. Further, tracking the loyalty as a liability in the ERP is important for effective GAAP-based accounting processes.
